About NYC Drum Scanning

NYC Drum Scanning is a specialized film scanning studio based in New York City, focused on high-resolution archival drum scans for photographers, artists, galleries, publishers, and institutions.

Using a Heidelberg drum scanner, we produce exceptionally detailed scans with outstanding tonal range, sharpness, and color fidelity suitable for exhibition printing, publishing, and archival reproduction. We work with 35mm, medium-format, and large-format film, with workflows tailored to the specific qualities of each image and negative.

Unlike automated or volume-based scanning services, every scan is handled individually with close attention to tonal separation, grain structure, shadow detail, and final print output. Our approach is informed by extensive experience in photographic printing, retouching, exhibition production, and color management across both fine art and commercial workflows.

NYC Drum Scanning is operated by photographer and master printer Josh Kolbo, whose work spans fine art print production, retouching, and photographic fabrication in New York City. In addition to studio practice and production work, Kolbo teaches in the Graduate Fine Arts program at Pratt Institute, bringing a deep technical and material understanding of photographic image-making to the scanning process.

Why Heidelberg Drum Scanning

The Heidelberg drum scanner remains widely regarded as one of the highest-quality scanning systems ever produced for photographic reproduction, valued for its exceptional sharpness, tonal separation, dynamic range, and natural rendering of film grain. Originally developed for the highest levels of prepress and fine art reproduction, Heidelberg scanners were engineered around extremely precise optical and mechanical tolerances, resulting in scans with remarkable depth, clarity, and smooth tonal transitions.

For exhibition printing, archival reproduction, and large-format output, Heidelberg scans are especially valued for their ability to retain subtle shadow detail, delicate highlight information, and the material character of the original negative without producing an overly sharpened or artificially processed appearance.

While other drum scanning systems, such as the Aztek Premier, remain in use, many photographers, printers, and imaging specialists continue to regard Heidelberg scanners as superior for fine art and exhibition-quality reproduction. Compared to the Heidelberg platform, Aztek systems are often perceived as producing scans with a harsher rendering of grain, less refined tonal transitions, and a more clinical or digitally processed appearance, particularly in shadow areas and large-format enlargements. The Heidelberg’s optical system and overall imaging pipeline are generally considered to produce a more natural, dimensional, and photographically faithful rendering of film.
